    The funny thing is that I’d seen that line, thought “Hey, I know some people who write smart stuff on the history of feminine hygiene” and moved on, but when I go back, the text originally comes from a reference to a conference I’d in fact helped organize.

    Plus, in this particular case, I’d think it’s a little more about the future well-being of woman, but gender’s just a social construct anyways, eh?

    Speaking of the ‘social construct’ question, I just read Michael Bailey’s ‘The Man Who Would Be Queen’, and it really changed some ways I was thinking about that issue. Bailey deals with the science of gender and sexual orientation (and he probably ends up answering your question in the negative). The best part is you can read it online for free:
